last night i watched The Fellowship of the Ring, part one of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. i have always been fascinated by the character first named Stryder and later revealed as the Aragorn the heir to the thrown of Gondor who has chosen a life of exile rather than fighting for his thrown. i like this character for a number of reasons, first of all he is a major bad ass and the greatest warrior and leader in the world, and second, he has spent his days in the wilderness preparing, battling, growing strong and knowledgeable.
when he meets the ring bearer, Frodo, he is already a man. i wish i knew the battles he had fought and the adventures he has set himself to before he even comes into the story because they might shine light on how he has become so courageous and tough.
this morning i read Luke 1 in the Message version of the Bible. it tells the story of how angels appeared to an old man and told him his old wife would have a baby who would be someone great. the most interesting verse to me today was the las verse in the chapter, it says, "The child grew up, healthy and spirited. He lived out in the desert until the day he made his prophetic debut in Israel."
the child mentioned in the story is john the baptist. like Aragorn from the Lord of the Rings, John spends the years of his youth and early manhood in the wilderness growing strong and wise. facing danger and hardship so that when his courage is called upon he will be ready to complete the mission he was created for.
lately i have been wondering whether i am in the wild preparing and living and fighting and growing or whether i am in among the dumb masses taking selfishly all i can, giving into gluttony, and murdering those who i was born to save. can one who has been living as such awake, rise from his bed and run head-long into the wilderness? can we change our course in a heartbeat, one moment cursing what is righteous and the next minute see our folly and seek redemption?
i recently reminded Gates that he needs to post his annual "10 BEST ALBUMS OF THE YEAR" post. he said he would get to work on it. in preparation for this i have prepared a list of , not necessarily, my picks for top ten albums but rather i picks as to what Gates is going to pick. i understand that not everyone who reads my posts dives as deeply into the art of finding new and unique music so this may only make sense to a few folks out there.
